چکیده

In three studies we found further evidence for a previously discovered Human-Robot (HR) asymmetry in moral judgments: that people blame robots more for inaction than action in a moral dilemma but blame humans more for action than inaction in the identical dilemma (where inaction allows four persons to die and action sacrifices one to save the four). Importantly, we found that people’s representation of the “robot” making these moral decisions appears to be one of a mechanical robot. For when we manipulated the pictorial display of a verbally described robot, people showed the HR asymmetry only when making judgments about a mechanicallooking robot, not a humanoid robot. This is the first demonstration that robot appearance affects people’s moral judgments about robots. Keywords—robot ethics; machine morality; humanrobot interaction; moral psychology; anthropomorphism.

Robot Motion Vision Pait I: Theory

A direct method called fixation is introduced for solving the general motion vision problem, arbitrary motion relative to an arbitrary environment. This method results in a linear constraint equation which explicitly expresses the rotational velocity in terms of the translational velocity. The combination of this constraint equation with the Brightness-Change Constraint Equation solves the gene...

قافیه‌اندیشی مولانا

I am thinking of rhymes, and my sweet heart sayes to me ''Do not Think of aught except Vision of me.'' Mawlana Jalal-addin Mohammad Balkhi, then Rumi, has conquered the hearts of people all over the world with his poem, which he sometimes refers to as ''thinking of rhymes''. Some people think that if Mawlana expresses dissatifaction with rhymes and rhythms it is because he thinks they are not...

Minimizing Maximality

Judgments about the locus of synchronic personal identity are often guided by the intuition that “I” am the thing that thinks, or minimally, that neither my body nor any part of it is a thinker distinct from me. Ted Sider argues in a series of articles that in order to reconcile this intuition with the principle of microphysical supervenience, we must accept ‘being a thinker’ as a maximal prope...

The World Development Report at Thirty: A Birthday Tribute or a Funeral Elegy?

Shahid Yusuf's review of the World Development Reports (WDRs) is elegant and insightful, but also wistful and nostalgic. He clearly believes that the WDRs have known better days, and I agree with him. He is positive about the future, but I am not sure I agree; I think the problems that affl ict the WDRs have deep causes that will not soon go away. In my comments, I shall follow the same general...
